Jim received his BA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1967 and an MBA from California State University Long Beach in 1969, followed by his service as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. After discharge, he became a vice president of a computer services corporation while attending Western State University College of Law (JD, 1978) where he was the Articles Editor of the Law Review and graduated Cum Laude.

Jim's practice focuses on employment and labor law. He served as senior counsel for Sears, Roebuck and Co. handling labor and employment matters in the 14 western states for 13 years before joining the Firm in 1991. He has been Chair of the Human Resources Committee of the Orange County Business Council and the Chamber of Commerce, served on the advisory committee for the Masters in Human Resources at Chapman University, is the legal advisor to the City of Santa Ana Personnel Board, and is a regular contributor to the Orange County Business Journal on issues of employment and labor law.
